James was incredibly thankful that Lily's temper seemed to mellow in the hours before dinner, so much so that he was fairly confident he would survive the day without an excess of physical pain courtesy Lily. In fact, he was becoming downright smug by the time the grandfather clock in the hallway struck twelve.
"So when do you wish to make our announcement?" James asked, taking her hand to pull her from the old chair.
"For once, I will bend to your judgement just because it doesn't matter one way or another to me." Lily shrugged.
James's family, who was following them to the dining room, stared as he pulled her without warning into the nearest room, which turned out to be a coat closet.
"I always said that wild animal lust would be their downfall." Sirius tutted
"Why, may I ask, in the name of all that's holy, did you drag me into a coat closet?" Lily asked, leaning on the closed door.
"Lumos." James muttered, making instant light flood the room. "Aren't you excited about being pregnant?"
"James, let's put it this way: you can answer that question yourself after you gain thirty pounds that's completely in your stomach, you throw up three times a day, you have hellacious mood swings that make your sweet husband seem like Lucifer himself so it's easier just to be quiet, you forget what your feet look like, people pat your stomach with appalling regularity, then, you try to expell a watermelon out your you know what, and then, and only then, can you answer that question." Lily gave a bright smile, then opened the closet door and stepped out.
"Well, aren't you two chatty?" Sirius questioned during dessert, neither Lily nor James having spoken all.
"Some people don't talk just to hear themselves."
"Are you going to let her talk to me like that, Prongs?" Sirius asked playfully.
"It doesn't appear that I can stop her." James returned, looking at Lily.
James and Lily sat there, staring at each other in a locked battle of wills, neither willing to be the one to back down.
"Oh bloody hell, they've got started on their staring bit again." Sirius groaned, obviously not seeing that they were having a silent argument.
"Would you watch your language, there are children here." Serenity snapped, cuffing Sirius in the back of the head.
"Self-righteous jerk." Lily muttered quietly.
"What exactly did I do?" James asked, setting his fork down.
"You are being you, which right now isn't very appealing." This was spoken through gritted teeth. Lily too set her fork down, and took a drink of water. "Look, I'm sorry. I realize I'm not being very nice, but I honestly can't help it."
"Fine." James had taken on his sulky five year-old tone, leaning back in his chair.
"I said I'm sorry! Can we please just move past this?" Lily slammed her forehead into her hands, staring at the ham on her plate.
"Sure, why not, we can add it to our list of things to talk about later."
